Highlights from Education Forum

On May 12, WakeUP Wake County, in partnership with other local organizations, hosted an education forum to discuss how the Wake County Public School System will address growth and economic challenges in the years ahead.  Tom Oxholm, a former Wake school board member and co-author of A School District's Journey to Excellence started things off by discussing whether the Wake County school system has achieved excellence. Ann Denlinger, President of the Wake Education Partnership, then gave a preview of her organization's forth-coming report "What is a World Class Education?" to highlight where the Wake School system should be moving to ensure our students can compete globally.  Click here to view her presentation. Johnna Rogers, Deputy Wake County Manager, then gave an overview of the population growth and economic challenges facing the Wake school system.  Click here to view her presentation. John Dornan, President and Executive director of Public School Forum, finished up with more specific information about funding for the Wake school system compared to other counties in the state.  Click here to view his presentation.  You can find more information in the Forum's Local School Finance Study. Following the presentations, a panel of local and elected officals took questions from the audience.  You can see a video stream of the entire forum on WRAL's website here, or RTN's website here.
